Randolph Caldecott (1846-86) was one of the most popular illustrators of children's books and periodical publications. In grace and refinement he was fully the rival of Stothard, but while possessing an equal appreciation of feminine and childish beauty, he far excelled that artist in vivacious humour and sportive fancy. He drew horses and dogs and the accidents of the hunting-field with the enthusiasm of the sportsman. (DNB). Ray 251. As a humorous illustrator, without bite, but with a touch of poetry, Caldecott is immortal. (Victorian Book Design and colour printing).
