¶ The rare first edition of this book that covers British whaling in the Greenland Sea, Spitsbergen, Baffin-Bay and Davis Strait from 1750 to 1910, with appendices of whaling ship lists, expenses, etc. It remains one of the best books on the subject. The detailed story of the most important and, at the same time, most speculative dangerous and exciting of fisheries which began in the days of Queen Elisabeth and lasted down to the outbreak of World War One in 1914.
