(THACKERAY, W. M.) Mrs Perkins's Ball. By M. A. Titmarsh. London, Smith, Elder & Co., 15 Waterloo Place, no date. (2)+46 p. + 22 hand coloured plates, one folding double-page, including frontisp. and titlepage, after humorous drawings by William M. Thackeray. Bound in brown half morocco with brown cloth covers. Spine divided into six panels by raised bands, lettered in gilt in the second and third. The others with a gilt flower. All edges gilt. ¶ An exact reprint of the original edition published in 1847, the first of Thackeray's Christmas books. An amusing book a satire of British social life, telling us the events and characters at the ball which Mr Titmarsh attends with his acquired comrade the Mulligan, and with the caricatures of the partygoers such as miss Toady, Lady Bacon and Lord Methuselah. The book was an instant success when it was first published in 1847. Thackeray produced five books in his Christmas series - four from Chapman and Hall and one from Smith, Elder & Co. George Smith published all of Thackeray's works, after buying the plates and copyrights from the previous publishers and Thackeray's daughters in 1865. This edition of 'Mrs. Perkins's Ball' would have been printed sometime after 1869 when Smith, Elder & Co., moved to 15 Waterloo Place in London. M. A. Titmarsh was the pseudonym William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-63) used for his series of Christmas Books published between 1847 and 1851.
