The work contains three lectures on English blind-stamped bindings from the 15th, 16th and 17th century. The author was librarian of Shrewsbury School, and an authority on bookbinding history. The present work accounts for many new groups of bindings that may be attributed to particular craftmen or binderies. His book devices a method of ornament-classification and description'. The plates shows 1089 photographic and rubbed examples of bindings, rolls, and ornaments, small stamps and roll rools, each impressed by hand by mid-fifteenth to seventeenth century.
