(CARACCIOLI, LOUIS-ANTOINE). Le Livre à la Mode. Nouvelle édition, marquetée, polie & vernissée. Europe (= Paris), chez les Libraires [= Duchesne), 1000700509 (= 1759). Printed entirely in red. with a woodcut vignette on the title. Uncut in blank blue wrapper. Stamp on title. ¶ A satirical work, poking fun at eighteenth-century fashion and customs. The first edition was printed in green and the second in red, both were published in 1759. The date on the title-page apparently alludes to the fashion of the time for expanding anything at all, clothes, texts, etc., with meaningless filling. The preface states 'La couleur verte n'ayant duré que huit jours, aInsi que toutes les modes, je vous offre le plus beau des vermillons...'. Louis-Antoine Caraccioli (1721-1803) was born and wrote in Paris, he studied in Mans and travelled in Italy, Germany and Poland. He joined the 'Congrégation de l'Oratoire' and enjoyed and admired the Paris bonne société, but he clearly enjoyed its follies as well. Barbier II,1321; Graesse II, 44; Lipperheide Xa 69. NBG VIII, 653.
