(AULNOY, MARIE CATHERINE DE.) RELATION DU VOYAGE D'ESPAGNE. Troisième edition. 1-3. The Hague, Henry van Bulderen, 1693. 12:mo. 184; 176; 228 pp. All titles printed in red and black. Some spotting at end of part three. Contemporary full calf, spine richly gilt, but the label with almost erased letters. Brunet I, 569. Third edition. First published in Paris in 1691. Marie Catherine le Jumelle de Barneville, comtesse d'Aulnoy wrote several historical novels, pseudo-memoires (of which this is one), and collections of fairy tales, for which she is perhaps most remembered today. Her books were immense successes during her life time, and her salon was from the 1690's among the most popular in Paris. Her reputation as a historian is, however, not the best: '...because she incorporated into "Memoires de la cour d'Espagne", "Relation du voyage d'Espagne", and "Memoires de la cour d'Angleterre" stories she had read or been told by others. However, her contemporaries in France and in England (where most of her works were soon translated) did not go to Aulnoy for exact data but for pleasure'.
