ZETTERSTEDT, JOHAN [JANNE] EMANUEL: REVISIO GRIMMIEARUM SCANDINAVIÆ. Upsaliæ, Typis Edquist et soc., 1861. 8vo. [2], 140, [2] pp. ¶ First edition. "Grimmia Hedw. is one of the largest moss genera. The taxa are notorious for their morphological variability, causing up to now notable identification problems. As a result of this, herbaria revision showed that up to 40% of the specimens had been misidentified. Lack of overview in the detailed and untransparant taxonomy of Grimmia has continuously led to description of species that had been described earlier, and some commonly occurring, cosmopolitan species were described tens of times, producing a Gordian knot with nearly 1000 names in the Index Muscorum (Van der Wijk et al. 1962). Since 1990, the author has worked on a world-wide revision of the genus, visiting species-rich habitats (Greven 1997), and revising nearly 20.000 herbarium specimens, including hundreds of types. The aim in compiling a worldchecklist has been to enumerate as accurately as possible all the accepted Grimmia species, and their synonyms. Although Grimmia never has been revised on a world-wide scale, from a number of countries, revisions have been carried out. Zetterstedt (1861) was the first Grimmiologist, who revised the Scandinavian Grimmia and Racomitrium species. Since that time only a few publications dealt with Grimmia taxonomy exclusively, in chronological order: Loeske (1913, 1930): Europe, Jones (1933): North America, Deguchi (1978): Japan, Cao & Vitt (1986): China, Greven (1995): Europe, and Muñoz (1999): South America. In this paper, 86 taxa are recognized at specific level, in the future this number will grow slightly, however, to all appearance only a few taxa will be added. From each species, the geographical distribution, in terms of the Index Muscorum, and synonyms, found during the revision, are given. Eight taxa are added as doubtful species, types could not be found and protologues did not give sufficient points of contact to already described species"(Henk C. Greven at http://home.planet.nl/ greve022/worldchecklist.html).
