Atlas Juvenilis eller Geographiska Chartor till ungdomens tienst i methodisk ordning författade af And. Åkerman (..) [And] Kort förklaring öfver Atlas Juvenilis som utgafs i Upsala i 20 chartor 1768. Andra gången uplagd och med 10 chartor förökt 1774.

Collation text: Title + (4 pp.) + 192 pp. Atlas and text: Brown half calf. Sprinkled boards. Atlas: rubbed board papers. A few ink marks. Bumped and damaged corners. Cracked calf at the joints. The back board partly browned. Slight finger dirt to some map margins. A couple of small holes to the back fly leaf. A few minor underlinings. The maps are in very nice condition. No foxing or staining. Text: worn board papers withs small loss. Bumped corners. Minor tear at the top of spine. Several name inscriptions to the inside of the boards. Title page with a couple of creases and some browning to the margins. A few underlinings in ink. A few pages with a brown stain in the lower corner. The occasional brown spot or stain.
¶ A handsome little set. The atlas has a beautiful title page with an engraved border typical for the late 18th century. The hand coloured maps have a charming simplicity. The maps of Sweden, France, Polynesia (including Australia, here named Ulimaroa) and the West Indies folds out. Atlas Juvenilis is an early swedish school atlas, probably only preceeded by one other domesticly produced school atlas. It was a great success from the start and it was published in several states and editions until 1815. This atlas has the same title as the second edition of 1774 (first edition 1768) but published 1798 or later. (The map of the West Indies is dated 1797 and Polynesia 1798). These two maps are not in the index. This atlas also contains the first map by Daniel Djurberg - France. Djurberg eventually continued the publishing of the atlas. Several maps were changed between1774 and 1798. The present copy comes with the exceedingly rare text volume. Very few copies of the text have been seen in the market place. The text is probably of the second state of the second edition. The first edition of the text was published in Uppsala in 1768 by Johan Edman. The second edition of 1774 was also published in Uppsala by Johan Edman. To the present text volume, a new title nas been added, with Carl Stolpe in Stockholm as printer. The Uppsala edition and the Stockholm edition seems to be identical except for the title and the foreword. Anders Åkerman is best known for his globe production in Uppsala under the superintendence of "Kosmografiska Sällskapet", in the 1760s. and 1770s. When Åkerman died in 1778 the globe production was moved to Stockholm. Maybe the present text volume was published in conjunction with this relocation?
