CARPELAN, W. M.
V. Ö. 32. [Stockholm. Generalstabens karta]

[1870s?] 55 x73 cm including margins. Partly hand coloured lithographic map. The margins has some damages, tears and dirt. A couple of stains to the verso. The image area in fine condition.
¶ An interesting and rare map lithographed after Carpelans original engraving of 1827, which was the very first map sheet to be engraved to Generalstabens karta (The General Staff Map). The present map seems to bee a copy of the original engraving, which is odd since lithographic printing was first introduced in 1876 to Generalstabens karta. The regular 1877 lithographic V. Ö. 32 map of the area is quite different, among other things railways have been added and the delineation of the landscape is much more accurate. For some unknown reason a lithographic copy has been made of the original Carpelan engraving. With all probability it must have been printed in the 1870s or later. Generalstabens karta was an effort to produce a serie of very detailed maps covering the entire country. The mapping started in the early 19th century and continued until the 1920s when the whole country finally was covered. At first the maps were secret, and for military use only. By the mid 19th century they became public. Before 1876 the maps were engraved and published in small numbers. These early maps are a rare find. When lithographic printing was introduced in 1876 the maps became available in good numbers at a much lower price. Generalstabens karta is an endless treasure of information because of all the details, down to each cottage and small country road.
