AGLIO, AGOSTINO: [31 water coulour paintings] 37 x 27 cm Very nice condition. ¶ Water colours painted on heavy paper depicting historic costumes from the year 237 A.D. up to the 1600s. Explanations in english hand writing below the images. Probably sketched to be used for an (unpublished?) work on historic costumes. The set contains 31 paintings. The first is numbered 1 and the last is numbered 133, which might suggest that at least 102 plates are missing from the run. On the other hand it is not sure since the numbering looks to have been made by a later hand and may have some other meaning. Plates number 3, 72, 81, 82 and 122 are signed by Aglio. The others are not signed. Aglio, an italian, settled in England at the age of twentyfive and stayed there for the rest of his life. He died in 1857. He was a painter, decorator and lithographer. His most well known work "Antiquities of Mexico" (1830-1848), contains a thousand lithographs. Aglio decorated numerous official theatres, churches and estates in England and Ireland.
