Smålands Husar Regemente [Water colour painting]
[Ca. 1820-1835] Image area 13,5 x 12,5 cm. Including margins 17 x 14 cm. With passe partout 28,5 x 24,5 cm. Toned passe partout. Fine condition.
¶ A very interesting painting depicting a soldier from Smålands Husar Regemente riding with raised sword. It has bright beautiful colours and catches instantly the eye. Almost identical images appears in C. T Lövstädts album "Miniatur-teckningar af åtskilliga svenska militair-uniformer" published c. 1823, and in Adolph Schützercrantz album "Kongl. Svenska Armeens Uniformer" published in 1825. Only minor details at the uniforms and the backgrounds differ. In the case of Löwstädts album even the lettering style below the image corresponds with our painting. The original paintings to Löwstädts album are stored at the swedish Army Museum. The Museums original to Smålands Husar Regemente is almost identical to our water colour, but smaller. It is impossible to know if our painting was made before or after the printed albums and the Lövstädt original. An educated guess would be that it was made later, since another painting from the same serie - in our possession - has a cut water stamp "831" which might be interpreted as 1831. The painting has no signature.
