Contemporary brown half calf, Title in gilt at the front cover. The photos are mounted at large card board sheets. Some loss at the top of the spine. Somewhat worn and loose binding. Minor wear to the gilt. Some small tears and some dirt to the end papers. Some browning to the edges of the card boards. One card board with small loss in the lower right corner. Photos in fine condition. ¶ A serie of photos of Paris and the "Exposition Universelle" of 1889. Since the mid 1800s world expositions were held in major cities around the world. The first in London in 1851, the second in New York !853/1854, the third in Paris in 1855 and so on. For the 1889 exposition the Eiffel Tower was built. Today the only surviving structure. from the exposition. Since 1889 was the centennial of the french revolution there was a suggestion to build a 300 meter tall guillotine, but it was rejected by the commisioners who selected the Eiffel Tower in its place. The photos shows the Notre Dame and the Seine, Place de la Concorde, Champs Elysées, Panorama des Sept ponts, L´Opera, Exposition Universelle vue generale, The Eiffel Tower, The exposition from the Eiffel Tower and four photos from the exposition area including the interior of an exposition hall, Cairo street, and a grup of vietnamese? women in traditional costumes.
