KIEPERT, HEINRICH: Westlisches-Nordamerica. Berlin bei Dietrich Reimer. 1867. 62,5 x 51 cm including margins. Large margins. A loss to the lower right corner and a few short tears and creases to the margins. ¶ A large map of the western part of the United States just at the beginning of the great expansion across the plains. In 1867 the classic indian wars were in full swing across the northern plains, and would continue for another twenty years. The Dakotas, Wyoming and Montana were still just territories and the first train line across the continent was not yet completed. A truly historic map of a defining period in the history of the United States. The map comes from the second edition of the "Neuer Handatlas über alle theile der erde" published in Berlin by Reimer in 1867-1870. The size of the Kiepert atlas maps were only second to the Handatlas of the Geographisches Institut in Weimar. The maps were printed in color lithography (two colors) and handcolored. These maps were published in an interesting transition period between hand coloring and color printing. Some german mapmakers, like Justus Perthes and their Stieler atlas, kept some handcoloring until the 1890s, while other atlases were color printed already in the 1860s. Heinrich Kiepert first worked for the Geographisches Institut in Weimar, mainly with historic maps and atlases A swedish edition of his Weimar historic atlas were published in three editions 1857, 1863 and 1872. He terminated his position at the Geograpisches Institut in 1852 and went to work for Reimer in Berlin. At his new employer he started to publish the first parts of the first edition of the "Neuer Handatals" in 1855.
