Oscar Parland, born 1912 in Kiev, Russia, of of English-Russo-German-Swedish descent. His family moved to finland where he went to Swedish-language school. He studied medicine, became a psychiatrist and has been a practising doctor and as well as a writer and translator. He has won many literary Prizes, and worked with the Swedish PEN since 1971. This novel coplements his novel of childhood The Year of the Bull set in Karelia, Finland 1917.
