Engraved map of the western coast of Novaja Semlja (the eastern coast still a terra incognita). Leiden. No date. [First fourth of the 18th century]. 24x40 cm. With a triple frame. The map itself measures 15x20 cm. Edge reinforced. Some miniature holes in the top margin.
¶ The Russian island was discovered by Wiloughby 1553. Later it was visited primarily by Dutch seafarers. Their accounts are probably form the basis of Aa´s map. A Russian colonisation was initiated in 1877.
