Single sheet depicting the interior of a crowded meeting-house of the Society of Friends; an old woman addresses the (much caricatured) company, many of whom appear to be affected by the discourse; above is engraved »Preface to the Reader. »Beloved, Believe not every Spirit, but try the Spirits whether they are of God: because many false Prophets are gone out into the World.« Beneath is a long engraved text (the »short examination« of the title) debatingwhether the origin of the »Working, Groans, Sighs, Tears, Pangs, &c.« which characterise Quaker meetings is divine, sub-lunary, or demonic, and urging baptism »every one of you«; engraved surface 27×36,3 cm. Uncut copy with wide margins. With some foxing mostly in the margins. A tear in upper margin and a tear in lower margin.
