Spines lettered in gilt, marbled boards and end papers. Only mild wear, very good condition. Text with mild foxing here and there, but mostly a fresh copy. Vol. I; Autrefois. 1830-1843. (IV), 360 pages. Last blanc. Vol. II; Aujourd'hui. 1843-1855. (IV), 408 pages. In his foreword Victor Hugo says that this is "Memoires d´une ame" (A souls memories) and that the reader shall read as he reads a book by a dead. The book was written partly in exile at Jersey and Guernsey, after Hugo was condemned for his book against death penalty in France 1851.
