In this paper Hartmann and Davis first presented their "giant impact" theory, explaining the origin of the Moon; the Moon was formed from debris thrown out after a giant impact between the Earth and another planetary object. This theory explains the unique properties of the Moon which distinguishes it from ordinary planetary moons, and which had earlier been a mystery.
