The Dutch astronomer Frederik (Frederick, Friedrich) Kaiser was director of the Leiden Observatory, known today as the ''Old Observatory'', from 1838 until his death. Kaiser contributed significantly to the advancement of Dutch astronomy, and is particularly known for his 1862 series of drawings of Mars at its opposition and his rather precise determination of the planet's rotational period. In recognition of his work, craters on both the Moon and Mars have been named in his honor, as has the asteroid 1694 Kaiser. This is a Danish translation of his popular work ''De Sterrenhemel''.
