Lavater: (1527-1586). Swiss Reformed theologian. This book on ghosts was originally was published in 1569 in German and 1570 in Latin. Shortly thereafter also in French, English and Italian. Besides ghosts, the book deals with strange sounds, voices, inexplicable events and peculiar accidents occurring after someone’s death. Lavater did not believe that souls or ghosts of the dead could appear. If someone does see these apparitions, they aren't the souls of the deceased, but the work of demons. ""As a Protestant, Lavater rejected the idea of Purgatory... as an outdated Catholic concept. This greatly complicated the idea of 'ghosts', often thought to be visitations by human souls that were not at rest, such as those who died unbaptized or in tragic or violent circumstances. Without Purgatory, ghosts could only be visitations from Heaven or Hell. Lavater felt they were more likely to have come from Hell, and this meant that many ghosts were demonic and their requests dangerous: they could be trying to lure humans into damnation, for example by persuading them to commit murder or suicide"" (British Library). [The first part, this book of ghosts, spirits and ghosts appear in the oftenditur, variable-monsters that happen.] Secunda pars: Hujus libri ostendit SPECTRA Illa & alias res mirandas, non esse animas hominum : sed vel bonos vel malos ange-los, aut alioqui aranas quasdam operationes. [The second part of: the matter of this book he shows SPECTRA She and the other shall be wondered at, that it is not the souls of the men's shoulders: but it is either the good or the evil angels, otherwise that of a spider, or some of the operations of the.]. Tertia pars: In qua ostenditur qvare, vel in qvem finem devs SPECTRA Apparere, atque alias res mirandas sinat accidere: Item, Quo pacto se homines gerere debeant, quibus aliguid hujusmodi objicitur. [A third part of them, By what is shown, therefore, the end of God of mine SPECTRA QVEM to appear, or in, Mirandas to allow it to happen and doing other things: Also, by which means they are people to conduct themselves, this kind of aliquid which is put before it.] Magnen: (c. 1590 - c. 1679). A French physician and advocate of atomism. Beside his work about atoms, he published in 1648 the two books about the medical usage and effects of tobacco and manna.
