First issued in blue illustrated wrappers, the book failed to sell in significant numbers, perhaps partly due to its highly theoretical content and the fact that rockets large enough to carry objects into space was still an abstraction in the mid 1920s. The rest of the edition was later reissued with the plain printed wrappers present on this copy. A total of 1500 copies were printed and both issues are now rare.Walter Hohmann (1880-1945) was born in Hardheim, Germany, and lived in South Africa for part of his youth, during which time he developed an interest for astronomy as he studied the southern constellations together with his father. He graduated from the Technical University of Munich in 1904 and received his Ph.D. from the RTWH Achen University in 1920. Hohmann spent his career working as an engineer and a city planner in Vienna, Hanover and Breslau (Wroclaw), before settling in Essen. In his spare time he revived his interest in astronomy and began to give serious thought to the problem of interplanetary flight. A key element, he discovered, was fuel-efficiency, which eventually led him to calculate and present, in the present work, what is now known as the ”Hohmann transfer orbit”, an orbital manouver using only two engine impulses to move a spacecraft between two coplanar orbits. The publication led to his involvement in the Verein für Raumschiffahrt, a German society of amateurs propagating rocket development and space flight. However, the increased focus on the use of rockets as weapons during the Nazi era led to Hohmann’s disinvolvement from rocketry, as he only wanted to contribute to its peaceful uses.Perhaps a good measure of the importance of ”Die Erreichbarkeit der Himmelskörper” is that an English translation entitled ”The attainability of heavenly bodies” was published by NASA in 1960. For many years the ”Hohmann transfer orbit” was believed to be the most fuel-efficient way to - for example - move a satellite from a lower to a higher orbit, until a more complicated but even more efficient approach, called the ”bielliptic transfer”, was developed. Hohmann also took an interest in many other aspects of spaceflight and proposed, among other things, a separate landing module for a spacecraft travelling to the moon. The latter idea was, as we know today, followed through by the American Apollo project in the 1960s.

Third edition of Gutkius collection of dissertations at the university of Wittenberg. Georg M. Gutke (or Gutkius) (1589–1634), was rector for the gymnasium in Berlin. Christian Matthiae (1584-1655), theologian and teatcher at several universities, for a short time also teatcher at Sorø in Denmark. Second edition of his important contribution to the development of the Political Science, first published in 1618. He made three systematical studies in 1618; on ethic, logic and this on politics. Finally a later edition of Althamer’s important comments on Tacitus’ Germania, first published in 1529. Andreas Althamer (c. 1500-1539) was a Swiss theologian.

Vy över Köpenhamn och Själland i fågelperspektiv. I förgrunden, framför Kristianshamn, syns kortspelande soldater samt kvinnor och barn. Vid sidan syns Öresund med fartyg och uppe i kanten till höger syns Skåne. Ett separat tryckt textblad med rubriken ”Triomf van Koppenhagen onder Frederick de derde”, som innehåller en lista på de svenska förlusterna och en dikt av J. van den Vondel saknas. Den 11 februari 1659 satte den stora svenska stormningen av Köpenhamn igång efter långvarig belägring. Den misslyckades, delvis på grund av den tillit svenskarna satte till den rekognosering av Köpenhamns försvar som Erik Dahlberg gjort ett halvår tidigare. Han hade där grundligt missbedömt styrkan i försvarsverken, framförallt vid Slottsholmen, där det svenska huvudanfallet sattes in.

Den innehåller även en avhandling av Hannes Finnsson, ”Dissertatio historica-litteraria de speculo regali” (s. ix-lxx). Den danska versionen är utförd av Jón Eiríksson. Utgivningen skedde av sällskapet ”Hid ósynilega félag”, som hade grundats 1760. Detta var dock den enda publikationen som utkom. ”Konungs skuggsjá” är ett norskt arbete, skrivet omkring 1250, och är en praktisk samhällslära, en furstespegel, som i det bevarade stycket vänder sig till köpmän och kungens hird. Ursprungligen fanns även stycken för det andliga ståndet och bönderna, men de har inte bevarats. Den har troligen kommit till som en lärobok för den blivande kung Magnus Lagaböter (1238-80). Johan Valentin Broberg (1825-87) var bokintresserade läkare och var bl.a. verksam som bibliotekarie vid Karolinska institetet. Han var Ledamot av både Svenska läkaresällskapet och av Svenska fornskriftsällskapet.

This fine work on Switzerland with a total of one large map and 36 folding plates, several with town views but also on minerals and fossils is a compilation made by Johann Georg Altmann (1695-1758), and is based on the earlier works by Abraham Ruchats (1680-1750) and Abraham Stanyans (1669-1732). The compilation was first published in 1730.

Inserted in the historical narrative and also several memoires, in part one memoires of Sir Walter Raleigh, in part two of Admiral Montague and General Monk etc.John Campbell (1708-75) was a very succesul Scotish author of historical works, according to Samel Johnson ”the richest author that ever grazed the common of literature”. His ”Lives of the Admirals, and other Eminent British Seamen” was first publised in 1742 to 1744. A new edition was published in 1785.

Hans brevväxling, här utgiven postumt av C. Herold, dels med administrationen i Holstein-Gottorp och dels med holsteinska ministrarna von Goertz och greve Reventlau, är en viktig källa till historien om Karl XII i Bender. På svenska finns breven delvis tryckta i Gjörwells ”Swenska Bibliotheket” del 1, och delvis i ”Förrådet, eller samling af åtskilliga histor. och andra ämnen”, som utkom 1760, även den utgiven av Gjörwell. Ett urval publicerades även i bihanget till Motrayes resor. Den enda kompletta svenska översättningen finns i Floderus “Handlingar hörande till konung Carl XII:s historia”, som utkom 1819-26. Archibald Philip Primrose, femte earlen av Rosebery och förste earl av Midlothian (1847-1929) var engelsk politiker, bl.a. premiärminister 1894-95, och författare. Han skapade en stor boksamling på sitt slott Durdan, och skänkte bl.a. 3000 sällsynt skotska böcker till The National Library of Scotland.

Frederikke Koës Bröndstedt (1818-97) was daughter to the Danish archaeologist and traveller Peter Oluf Bröndstedt and his wife Frederikke Koës, who died in 1818 after the birth of Frederikke, their third child.The collection contains two youth works by Johannes Brahms (1833-97), who under the pseudonym ”G. W. Marks” published some piano arrangements and fantasies by the Hamburg firm of Cranz in 1849. Brahms was later assiduous in eliminating all his early works.

Fine later edition of Petrarca’s work with the commentaries by the poet and scholar Alessandro Vellutello (born 1473), first published in 1525. The wood-cut illustration are after the edition printed by Giolito in Venice 1547. Several editions were published during the 16th century.

Berömd antikejserlig pamflett i vilken general Tilly avbildas som krum vagabond på väg till Rom för att söka skydd från svenskarna. Han bär på ryggen en tunna med ”Mala conscientia” och en korg med ”Nimiae exactiones”. Bredvid honom går en get och i bakgrunden syns staden Rom medan en stark vind, ”Vindicta divina”, blåser emot dem. ”Miserere mei”, säger Tilly. Under bilden tryckt dikt i två spalter: ”Hilff Gott! wie muß sich doch der gute Tylli leiden, [...]”.

The first printed edition of Die Jahreszeiten (Les Saisons, The Seasons) published the same year as the first performance, and shortly before it was published in Mus. Magazin (Hoboken). This edition is for piano and vocals with the text in German and English. The first partitur and a similar piano score as this with the text in German and French were published by Breitkopf & Härtel in 1802. The title vignette is signed by Schubert del. and F. W. Nettling sc. The last 3 pages contain a list of published works from Breitkopf und Härtel.The Seasons and The Creation were the two great oratoriums of Haydn’s later years. They both have their texts from English poets. The Seasons is by James Thompson and The Creation is based on Milton’s Paradise Lost. Haydn’s friend Baron Gottfried van Swieten translated both poems for the German librettos.

Contains descriptions of over 1100 species. Collaborators were N. F. Buchwald, M. P. Christiansen, C. Ferdinandsen, Poul Larsen, F. H. Møller, Ø. Winge et al. Anders Bohlin (1936-2020) var botaniker och mykolog, författare till bl.a. ”Halle- och Hunnebergs flora”. Han var tillsammans med hustrun Karin välkänd som svampkännare och ledare av svampexkursioner.

An interesting series - here complete with all 35 photos - showing the different stages of an imagined space shuttle mission to a space station, including launch preparations, launch, flight stage, docking, work and leasure at the station and the return to Earth. The space shuttle shown here are of the model first proposed and patented by NASA engineer Max Faget, with a smaller straight-winged orbiter mounted on a larger and equally straight-winged booster. This concept was eventually abandoned for the reusable, delta-winged orbiter, mounted on an expandable propellant tank, that became the final design. North American Rockwell, the company behind these concept sketches, also became the manufacturer of the Space Shuttle Orbiter that eventually was used in the American space program.The series contains the following photos: 1. From part 11 (1738) printed in Haag by Jean Neaulme and with the authors name.Gayot de Pitaval, François (1673-1743) was a French lawyer and mostly known for this famous collection of criminal and scandalous cases, from the famous medieval ”The Return of Martin Guerres” to his own times. It was first published in 20 volumes in 1734-43 but several were immediatly reprinted and also followed by extra supplements, and by other works like ”Der neue Pitaval”, with the name Pitaval becoming a synonyme for collections of criminal cases. Many notable authors drew their plots from Pitaval's editions, for example, E. T. A. Hoffmann.Nils S. von Koch (1801-81) was an influential Swedish liberal jurist and politician, married to Francis Eliza Lewin from England. He was very engaged in the social questions of his time like education, penalty laws and prisons, voting rights etc. Thanks to his wife he also had a broad English network.

Livius is in the first pagination, Lucius Florus on ll. 1-67 in the second and the five books of Polybios on ll. 69-310. Polybios is edited with a septarate preface by Giovanni Francesco Torresani and an introduction by the translator Nicoló Perotti (1429-80).The first part of Aldus’ Livius edition, ”Titi Liuii Patauini Decas prima”, was published in 1518, the second, Titi Liuii Patauini Decas tertia” in 1519, the third ”Titi Liuii Patauini Decas quarta” in 1520, and the fifth and final part in 1533. The editor to this important edition was Giovanni Francesco Torresani, the son of Aldus Manutius’ business partner Andreas Torresani of Asola. In the preface to the first part Giovanni Francesco complains about the counterfeit edition being published in Florence by the Giunti.

Ekströms (1781-1859) beskrivning över Mörkö, som han skrev på uppdrag av Nils Bonde, hade ambitionen att täcka allt. Öns naturalhistoria upptar två tredjedelar av texten, med en rik beskrivning av bl.a. insektsfloran, men beskrivningen innehåller även anekdoter och folkloristik om allmogens vidskeplighet m.m. Den blev en stor framgång när den utkom 1828. Gunnar Brusewitz frågar sig (i Björnjägare och fjärilsmålare) retoriskt om ”...någon författare kommit närmare det linneanska idealet för en topografisk skildring än pastorn på Mörkö”. Den handkolorerade planschen föreställer ett par i sockendräkt.

Första upplagan av Olof von Dalins klassiska svenska historia som brukar kallas för det första ”moderna” allmänna svenska historieverket, och som tidsmässigt sträcker sig fram till och med Karl IX. Dalin (1708-63) bryter här mot den tidigare svenska historieskrivningen, framförallt genom elegansen och lättheten i framställningen men även genom att med den nya ”vattuminskningsteorin” korta ned Sveriges historia med åtskilliga tusen år jämfört med den tidigare rudbeckianska historieskrivningen. Metodiskt var han dock ingen förnyare. De graverade vinjetterna är utförda av Jean Eric Rehn och Per Gustaf Floding. Friherre Fredrik Philip Klingspor (1761-1832) var bl.a. ståthållare på Stockholm slott och stor konstvän och själv duktig miniatyrmålare. Hans stora bibliotek på över 2000 nummer såldes på auktion 9 april 1823. Han samlade därefter ihop en ny samling, som såldes efter hans död. Hans böcker är ofta inbundna i band som dessa.

Marmorerat linneband, ryggen med brun skinnetikett (G. Hedberg). Ur Thore Virgins bibliotek, med hans namnteckning daterad 1928 och superexlibris på frampärmen, och ur Per S. Ridderstads, med hans namnteckning. Collijn 461f. Utgiven av Johannes Bureus med fina typografiska detaljer. ”Konnunga styrilse” är en medeltida furstespegel, dvs en uppfostringslära för en ung kung, och eventuellt författad för Magnus Eriksson ca 1330. Författaren är okänd och gissningar har gjorts på både Brynolf Algotson och Philippus Ragvaldi, men troligen är det en bearbetning av den italienska teologen och författaren Colonnas ”De regimine principum”. Manuskriptet kom till Bureus via Johan Skytte men stammar sannolikt ursprungligen från Vadstena kloster. Manuskript är idag försvunnet och tidigare har dess äkthet ifrågasatts men i och med fyndet av det så kallade ”Vadstenafragmentet” i Helsingfors senatsarkiv 1867 har dock verkets äkthet bestyrkts. I språkligt hänseende är denna rättsurkund av oskattbart värde och Henrik Schück har kallat Bureus utgåva för ”vår första egentliga textedition”. En ny upplaga trycktes 1650 och en ny edition utgavs av Schefferus år 1669. Exemplaret såldes på den första Thore Virgin-auktionen, där felaktigt kallad pappband (Libris 1975, nummer 176).

Almquist, Sveriges bibliografiska litteratur 1375 för avsnittet ”Libellus [...] de scriptoribus rei nummariæ Svethicæ [...]”. Almquist 1379 för Warmholtz. Elias Brenner som brukar kallas den svenska numismatikens fader utgav redan under 1690-talet den första upplagan av ”Thesaurus”. Arbetet är egentligen en illustrerad katalog över hans egen mynt- och medaljsamling, vid denna tid den största i landet. Han var en skicklig miniatyrmålare och tecknade själv ”efter sine veritable originaler” 431 svenska mynt och medaljer, vilka sedan av honom själv och andra graverades eller skars i trä. Brenner fortsatte att samla ända till sin död 1717 och planerande ivrigt en andra upplaga. Denna, som slutligen blev utgiven av Niklas Keder, är större än den första, och försedd med Brenners fina kopparstick. Brenners myntsamling erbjöds först till svenska staten men såldes istället till den engelske köpmannen Thomas Grainger, och sedan vidare till en medlem av huset Demidoff i Ryssland. En senare Demidoff (eller Demidov) skänkte åren 1803 och 1806 Brenners svenska mynt till den numismatiska samlingen i Moskvas universitet. Dessa samlingar övergick efter revolutionen 1917 till Pusjkin-museet i Moskva. Warmholtz arbete är en latinsk översattning, utförd av G. Regnér, av ett sammandrag av numismatikdelen i ”Bibliotheca historica Sueo-Gothica”, och avsedd att vara ett bihang till ”Thesaurus”.

Planscherna är med tre undantag nedminskade kopior från Svecia antiqua. Johann Georg Goelgel (1669-1732) var jurist och medlem av rådet i Regensburg.

First edition of this important work on organic analysis and which is a ”... transition between the old and new methods of analysis, represented by a work of Nees von Esenbeck, Bischof and Rothe, "Die Entwickelung der Pflanzensubstanz", Erlangen, 1819, a rare book which is otherwise of considerable interest in the history of plant chemistry. This contains tables, from which the chemical formulae may be deduced from the results of distillation analyses, containing 981 'complexions' of the five binary compounds of oxygen, hydrogen and carbon, namely, water, carbonic oxide, carbonic acid, olefiant gas and marsh gas.” (History of Organic Analysis, in ”Nature” 134 (1934), page 95.) Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck (1776-1858) was a German nature-philosopher, physician and botanist, president of the Leopoldina and professor if botany at Erlangen, Bonn and finally in Breslau. Carl Gustav Bischof (1792-1870) was a chemist and in 1819 appointed to the position of an extra-ordinary professor of chemistry at Bonn, and in 1822 to that of a full professor. Heinrich August Rothe (1773-1842) was a mathematician and professor in Erlangen. The work consists partly of letters between the three scientist on the subject.

Very fine dark red morocco, richly gilt spine with raised bands, boards with triple gilt borders and gilt fleurons in corners, richly inner gilt bordures, all edges gilt and with wrappers preserved (Noulhac, stamp-signed on inner front boards). Two volumes, in marbled box with morocco edges. Book plates of Armand Sibien Architect and of H. Grandjean. One of 100 exemplaires ”de grand choix sur papier du Japon et velin du Marais”, this is number 49. With all the 63 illustrations, 21 on separate plates and 42 vignettes, doubled in two different states, one before letters and one after. They are made after Adolphe Lalauze and engraved by Léon Boisson. The French book binder Henri Adrien Noulhac (1866-1931) set up his workshop in Paris in 1894. Specialized initially in plain leather bindings (reliures jansenistes) and copies of 18th-century bindings. By 1900 he had begun to incorporate modest floral emblems into the dentelled fillet borders on his covers.Madame Campan or Jeanne-Louise-Henriette Genêt Campan (1752-1822) was one of Marie Antoinettes closest lady-in-waiting. She remained so up until the French revolution and the storming of the Tuileries Palace by the revolutionaries in 1792. She survived the terror although she lost all her material possessions but made comeback during Napoleon I as a superintendent of the academy at Écouen for the education of orphaned daughters of members of the Légion d'honneur in 1807. Her memoires were first published postumously in 1822.

Very fine and rare facsimile of the original edition from 1761-1778 in a small subscription edition. The subsciption list gives 78 subscribers. The four parts are here issued in three volumes as the original edition, but the original large folio format is reduced to a more normal folio. The Benedict monk Dom François Bedos de Celles (1709-79) was a master pipe organ builder and his work ”L'Art du Facteur d'Orgues” is the largest and one of the most influential works on organ building, with its plates being re-used in numerous later works.
