Needs, Kris:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir58957
Omnibus Press 2015. Publishers hardcover, w jacket. VIII, 327 pp. With illustrations. Fine clean, unread copy. First edition, hardcover. "Ultimately, Dream Baby Dream is a book about history, and a vital one given its subject. Suicide paved the way for so much, from punk to no wave to industrial, but are cited more often as an influence than an important band in their own right. How they survived through all the upheaval of New York over the past half-century, and how their music stayed so bracingly unique, had to be documented permanently. Needs has thus done a service, and in the process told a tale that anyone interested in unbreakable artistic dedication will find fascinating."

His work is simultaneously subtle and spectacular, austere and playful whether it be a sheet of paper crumpled into a ball, a protrusion from the wall, a door opening and closing, the lights going on and off, or a soundtrack inside a moving lift. The book features a foreword by the artist and accompanying texts by Germaine Greer, Darian Leader, ColmTóibín and others, supplemented by an exhibition history, bibliography and biography" - HEAVY BOOK EXTRA POSTAGE MIGHT BE REQUIRED.

Eddie Martinez & Chuck Webster:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir57727
New York: Picture Box and ZieherSmith, 2008. Two small 8vos in hardcover, complete with obi. 128 pages in all. Illustrated in color. Fine set. First edition. - INSCRIBED by Chuck Webster with colored pencils to half title, dated 2011. - "This two-volume set features the psychedelic, expressionistic figuration of Eddie Martinez in one volume and the Thomas Nozkowski-esque abstractions of Chuck Webster in the other. Both Brooklyn-based artists, represented in New York by Zieher-Smith, are enamored with paint--both, in fact, embrace painting's historical baggage, its romantic and spiritual undertones. Martinez combines fearlessly expressive paint handling with a feel for cartoon imagery and personal symbology. Webster, on the other hand, makes Minimal talismanic works that are formally rigorous and impeccably polished. Together they present a friendly argument for the myriad possibilities of contemporary painting. An interview with the artists, who are old friends, and a selection of their collaborative drawings form a bridge between the books. First monographs for both artists, these volumes also include essays by Joao Ribas and Geoffrey Young."

Some foxing to topedge and light wear to jacket (see photo). Overall a clean and very good attractive copy. First edition thus. Christines Picture Book is a beautifully bound scrapbook of 122 leaves, originally dating from 1859 meant as gift and not for publication. On the right-hand pages and some of the left-hand ones, more than 1,000 pictures of widely varying kinds have been pasted in, most of them printed in colour or hand-coloured. In many instances, amusing little hand-written captions or verses have been added. It was compiled by Hans Christian Andersen and his friend, a Danish magistrate named Adolph Drewsen, who is named on the first sheet as being Christine's grandfather. The occasion was her third birthday, 30 October 1859. Christine was the great-grandchild of Jonas Collin, a civil servant who had been of great support to the young Hans Christian Andersen, and to whose family Andersen became closely attached. Its 122 pages contain over 1,000 pasted-in pictures plus a few paper cuts, an art form at which Andersen was adept. The images were collected from all kinds of European publications, and the result offers a unique pictorial snapshot of European culture of the 1850s.

Campos-Pons, Maria Magdalena. - Freiman, Lisa D. (ed.). - Enwezor, Okwui (foreword):
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir58636
Yale University Press, 2007. Large oversized and heavy hardcover with dustjacket, now protected. 183 pages, with 58 colour and 7 b/w illustrations. Fine copy. 1st edition. - "A stunning mid-career retrospective of an important and influential contemporary Afro-Cuban artist With a diverse oeuvre ranging from painting to mixed-media installations to performance, video, and photography, María Magdalena Campos-Pons is one of the most significant artists to emerge from post-Revolutionary Cuba. Her evocative works probe questions of race, class, cultural hybridism, and national identities in African diasporic communities. María Magdalena Campos-Pons: Everything Is Separated by Water is the first full-scale survey of the artists career. The title, borrowed from one of her works, evokes at once the dangerous sea crossings faced by her enslaved ancestors from Africa and her Cuban contemporaries seeking greater freedom in America, and the sense of dislocation felt when physical and geopolitical barriers divide family and friends, past and future. Lisa D. Freiman considers how Campos-Pons s practice, which is predicated on concepts of separation, memory, and fragmentation, developed and transformed from her artistic training and early production in Cuba in the 1980s through her move to the United States in 1991 and her subsequent recognition as a major figure in the international art world. Okwui Enwezor interprets Campos-Pons expressive materials--reassembled fragments of lost traditions and symbols, and memories of personal and collective history, religion, and mythology--within the context of post-colonial theory".

Danbolt, Mathias. - Rowley, Jane & Louise Wolthers (ed.):
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir46169
Copenhagen: Nikolaj 2010. Tall 8vo in original wraps as issued. 160 pp. Richly illustrated. Light wear to cover. 1. ed. "This book presents a series of original queer theoretical and artistic contributions relating the archive and writing of history to gender and sexuality. What gets forgotten in history writing, what has been forgotten in archives, and what is excluded from cultural canons? The book investigates how experiences and histories not shared and lived by the majority are remembered and told in an alternative language. The book contains 4 essays and the works of 13 contemporary artists. In the article "Lost and Found: Queerying the Archive" the curators Jane Rowley and Louise Wolthers discuss the challenge posed to traditional archives and history writing by analysing the works of 13 contemporary artists represented in the book and eponymous exhibition. Analysing the strategies of speculation, flirtation and confrontation, art historian Mathias Danbolt then maps the role of the archive in the text "Touching History: Archival Relations in Queer Art and Theory". In her text "Photographing Objects: Art as Queer Archival Practice", the American cultural theorist Ann Cvetkovich discusses the role of art as an 'archive of feelings' based on the artists Tammy Rae Carland and Zoe Leonard. And in "The Art of Losing" the American literary theorist Heather Love emphasises the importance of the inclusion of loss, pain, isolation and loneliness in queer history writing -- experiences so often excluded from mainstream narratives of homosexual liberation. Beautifully bound in two sections, the book also presents works by the artists Elmgreen & Dragset (DK/NO), Tejal SHah (IN), Conny Karlsson (SE), Cecilia Barriga (CHI), Flemming Rolighed (DK), Aleesa Cohene (CA), Mary Coble (US), Kimberley Austin (US), Al Masson (DK/FR), Heidi LUnabba (FI) and Benny Nemerofsky Ramsay (CA). The publication is interspersed with excerpts from I Remember (1970) by the American poet Joe Brainard. Published to accompany the exhibition of the same name curated by Jane Rowley and Louise Wolthers at Nikolaj Copenhagen Center of Contemporary Art in Copenhagen and Bildmuseet in Umeaa, Sweden."
