Oliver, 41. Westwood p. 51-54. Westwood & Satchell p. 228. Marston p. 218. ""The First Nicolas Edition"". Hinges a little weak. ""This edition was edited by Sir Harris Nicolas, and it has been the occasion for much extravagant admiration. The author of the Grolier Club check list is moved to the extent of prophecy that ""No finer edition of the Complete Angler will ever be published"". Like the Major edition of 1823, it is conspicuous for its illustrations, for Pickering, like Major, used some of the most prominent artists of the time."" (Oliver). ""In 1836, we do obeisance to Pickering's third edition, in which Waltons simple work puts on the purple of an unaccustomed sovereignty, and is scarcely to be recognised in its new and splendid investiture"" (Westwood). ""This superb edition contains the variations of all the first five editions, voluminous notes, with original and elaborate memoirs of Walton and Cotton, presenting many new facts. All the illustrations, with the exception of Cotton's Fishing House which is on wood, are engraved on copper or steel"". (Westwood & Satchell). ""But Pickering is not represented alone by the smallest Walton in existence. He gave us also in some respects the finest and most valuable, that of 1836 - the ""result of seven years' continuous labour and of much patient research and fostering care on the part of its publisher"". (Marston).
