(London, Taylor & Francis, 1865). Large 4to. Without wrappers. Extracted from "Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London.", Vol. 155 - Part I. Pp. 31- 70 and 6 lithographed plates. Clean and fine. ¶ First printing of this classic study of the large extinct armadillo, in which Huxley redescribes the genus Glyptodon in opposition to Owen who had established this as a genus and Charles Darwin had found remains of them in South America. The systematics of the Mamalia has a direct bearing on the questions of evolution and the problems of "origins". The paper is a contribution to the "Evolution Controversy", where Huxley was on Darwin's side.
