Book of Hours (Upholland Hours), Use of Amiens.


Amiens, c.1430-40. 4to. (135 x 185). 1 leaf of vellum, 1 column written in dark brown, red and blue ink in a gothic liturgical hand (both verso and recte). 14 small initials all in gold (recte). 15 small initials in gold (verso). Large repair to outer margin, not affecting text, traces from having been bound in inner margin. ¶ "This book [in which the present leaf was part of] was executed about the Fourteenth Century & is supposed to be the work of the celebrated Fra Angelica. It belongs, in fact, to a well-defined group of Amiens manuscripts of the second quater of the fifteenth century which centres around the Hours of Raoul d'Ailly." (Sotheby's, 1990).
