During the three years Linnaeus spent in Holland (1735-1738) he produced several important works, of which the most important was Systema naturae in 1735. Linnaeus was staying mostly with the the Anglo-Dutch banker George Clifford (1685-1760) at his estate at Hartekamp and the Hortus Cliffortianus was published at the expense of George Clifford and contains Linneaeus’ definitions and synonyms for the numerous species in Clifford’s botanical gardens.
