The writing of this official history of the Swedish wars with Poland and Denmark from 1655 to 1660 was entrusted by king Charles XI to Samuel Pufendorf, a German historian and expert on international law, who held the first chair of history at the new university of Lund (1668-1676) and was the official Historiographer of the Realm from 1676 until 1689. Gerhard Schøning ble i 1776 medlem av den Arnamagnæanske kommisjon, som besørget utgivelsen av de islandske håndskriftene, og fikk samtidig pålegg om å forestå en utgave av Snorres Heimskringla. Av denne utgaven, med latinsk oversettelse fikk han gitt ut to bind 1877-78, og en stor del av 3. bind var ferdigtrykt da han døde (Norsk biografisk leksikon).. .

Complete with Wandelaar’s 1 pp. explanation of the frontispiece, title printed in red and black, engraved title-vignette by A. van der Laar, Linnaeu’s dedications to George Clifford and to the “botanical reader”, the dedications dated 1737. Finely bound in modern dark brown morocco by J. M. Romeo, Barcelona. Spine gilt and with five raised bands. Covers richly gilt. Marbled edges. Preserved in marbled box. Very minor foxing. pp. 493 to the end, dampstained in lower outer corner.. . First edition of Linneaus’ first detailed catalogue of cultivated plants. During the three years Linnaeus spent in Holland (1735-1738) he produced several important works, of which the most important was Systema naturae in 1735. Linnaeus was staying mostly with the the Anglo-Dutch banker George Clifford (1685-1760) at his estate at Hartekamp and the Hortus Cliffortianus was published at the expense of George Clifford and contains Linneaeus’ definitions and synonyms for the numerous species in Clifford’s botanical gardens.

Title-page with quite heavy foxing, text with some offsetting and minor foxing, but more foxing towards the end. Plates clean.
