Aber Artro Hall, the birthplace of Patrick Shaw-Stewart, was later home to Antonia Marian Gamwell and her daughters Marian and Hope (who drove First World War ambulances in France and Belgium, and trained as pilots after the war). In 1910, Mrs Gamwell had engaged the Arts & Crafts architect Charles Edward Bateman to rebuild the hall, and in 1917 she received the Royal Red Cross, First Class, for her work as commandant of the Aber Artro Auxiliary Hospital, which she had opened in her home to treat wounded soldiers. After the Gamwell's tenure, the hall lay empty for a few years until it was offered for sale in 1928.
