Guttoso took an active part in the struggle against the Fascists and Nazis, and his experiences with the Resistance movement led him to produce this bitterly satirical series of drawings on the theme of wartime atrocities. The title is drawn from the text on the belt buckles of German soldiers in the Second World War. Trombadori who wrote the introduction was an art critic and journalist who had escaped from Fascist imprisonement in 1943, was subsequently arrested by the Germans in February 1944, and managed to escape again in August.
