Stockholm und Leipzig, C.E. Fritze, 1852. Contemp. hcalf. Spine gilt. The gilt lettering with wear. Spine slightly rubbed. (4),XIX,574 pp. Some yellowing to the last 6 leaves, halftitle and title slightly browned. A small and very faint dampstain to upper margins of the first 10 leaves. Otherwise clean. ¶ Scarce first edition German edition with additions by the author of this classic in alcohol-literature, the first work systematically classifying the physical and mental damages attributed to alcohol, thus for the first time treating alcoholism scientifically, and the work in which the word "alcoholism" is coined. (The Swedish edition appeared 1849-51).

As Pasteur is a pioneer of bacteriology, so Magnus Huss (1807-1890) occupies the same pioneering status within alcohol-research. He was professor in medicine at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden and physician to the Swedish king. In 1853 he received the Monthya Price from the French Academy for his research in alcoholism. Andral, who was one of the people who had awarded Huss for this prestigious prize, said on the occasion: "Magnus Huss has collected a great deal of material relating to chronic alcoholism, a condition rarely seen in France.", a quotation well describing the lack of scientific research of the field before Huss' work.

It is not the physical and mental symptoms described by Huss that give to this work its greatest significance - these had been described previously as well (albeit not systematically and without realizing the actual causes), the great importance of the present treatise lies in the fact that Huss here is the first to classify systematically the damage done by alcohol, and as such it provided a breakthrough in this field which only with Huss became a scientific one.
