Book of Hours (Upholland Hours), Use of Amiens.


Amiens, c.1430-40. 4to. (135 x 185). 1 leaf of vellum, 1 column written in dark brown, red and blue ink in a gothic liturgical hand (both verso and recte). 4 initials all in gold with a beatiful decoration of ivyleaf sprouting from two of the initial (recte). 5 small initial and 1 larger in gold with a beatiful decoration of ivyleaf sprouting from the larger initial (verso). Traces from having been bound in inner margin. ¶ "This book [in which the present leaf was part of] was executed about the Fourteenth Century & is supposed to be the work of the celebrated Fra Angelica. It belongs, in fact, to a well-defined group of Amiens manuscripts of the second quater of the fifteenth century which centres around the Hours of Raoul d'Ailly." (Sotheby's, 1990).
