kir58809
St. Gallen, Kunstmuseum & Goteborgs Konsthal - Kehrer, 2009. 4to in wraps as issued. 120 pages. illustrated, text in English. Near fine / fine copy. 1. ed. "Change of Place is the title of a joint work by New York artists. In interviews, women from diverse backgrounds are asked how they see themselves. The resulting photographs show not only those interviewed, but also the interpreters, subtly shifting the theme of the work to the question of what happens when information is translated from one language into another. Andrea Geyer (*1971) was the prime discovery at documenta XII with her Spiral Lands I. In quietly revealing works made up of both image and text, photographs are combined with historical data, news and fictional travel reports. Sharon Hayes (*1970) explores social realities by searching for historical parallels. She always chooses themes that have inscribed themselves in US history, with traumatic consequences."

Amsterdam, The Netherlands: Mondriaan Foundation, , 2009. Catalog for Fiona Banner's contribution to the Dutch Pavilion, 53rd Venice Biennale, June 7 - November 22, 2009. Wrappers. Dos-a-dos binding. Stitch bound and glued. Curator: Saskia Bos. Includes a coversation between the artist and curator and essays by Bruce Grenville, Dominic van den Boogerd, Doris von Drathen and Thomas Elsaesser. Minor edgewear to cover, clean inside. For the Dutch pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale, Fiona Tan has developed the project Disorient, which consists of three different works: Disorient, Rise and Fall, Provenance. Her audio-visual installation refers to Venice's pivotal position in the history of geostrategy in the time before the discovery of new routes to Asia diluted the city's power. Her project attempts to bridge the centuries by creating connections with both contemporary day-to-day reality and with the symbolic past that every visitor to Venice wants to grasp. The elaborately designed book (Design: Gabriele Franziska Götz) also presents other recent works by Tan. Fiona Tan's (*1966 in Indonesia) installations and films are the result of her ongoing investigation into representation and the role of images and portraits in contemporary culture. Her works were shown at many international venues: Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum; Istanbul Biennial; ICP Triennial, New York; Documenta 11, Kassel; the 49th Venice Biennale. Tan was shortlisted for the first Artes Mundi Prize in 2003 and the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2007.

A New Directions Paperback, 2010. IX, 548 pp. Very good copy with only minor wear. From a Broken Bottle Traces of Perfume Still Emanate: Volumes 1-3 collects the first three installments-Bedouin Hornbook, Djbot Baghostus’s Run, and Atet A.D.-of Nathaniel Mackey’s genre-defying work of fiction. A project that began over thirty years ago, From a Broken Bottle is an epistolary novel that unfolds through N.’s intricate letters to the mysterious Angel of Dust. Unexpected, profound happenings take place as N. delves into music and art and the goings-on of his transmorphic Los Angeles-based jazz ensemble, in which he is a composer and instrumentalist. This triple-set book opens in July 1978 with a dream of a haunting Archie Shepp solo, and closes in September 1982 in a parallactic studio recording session on a glass-bottomed boat borne aloft by the music. Nathaniel Mackey was born in Miami, Florida, in 1947. He is the author of several books of fiction of “exquisite rhythmic lyricism” (Bookforum), poetry, and criticism and has received many awards for his work, including the National Book Award in poetry for Splay Anthem, the Stephen Henderson Award from the African American Literature and Culture Society, the Bollingen Prize, and the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize. Mackey is the Reynolds Price Professor of English at Duke University.

Soul Jazz Books, 2011. 4to in flexi boards as issued. 208 pages, richly illustrated. Very good copy. The ESSENTIAL book about Voguing featuring 200+ photographs, interviews and text on the legends of the House Ballroom Scene of New York City 1989-92. Introductory essay is by Tim Lawrence, author of the seminal music books: 'Life and Death on The New York Dance Floor',‘Love Saves the Day: A History of American dance music culture, 1970-79’ and ‘Hold on to your Dreams: Arthur Russell and the Downtown Music Scene, 1973-92’. Voguing came out of the extraordinary house ballroom scene that emerged in Harlem, New York in the 1980s where men competed against one another for their dancing skills, the realness of their drag and their ability to walk on a catwalk runway like a model. These wild years of voguing and the house ballroom scene are vividly captured at its height in hundreds of amazing, previously unpublished photographs. A visual riot of fashion, gender, polysexuality and subversive style, Voguing and the House Ballroom Scene of New York 1989-92 is also a fascinating and timely document on sexuality and race.

Ford, Richard Thompson:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir59965
New York: Simon & Schuster, 2021. Hardcover w jacket. XIII, 443 pp. With illustrations. Very good copy. "A revelatory exploration of fashion through the ages that asks what our clothing reveals about ourselves and our society. Dress codes are as old as clothing itself. For centuries, clothing has been a wearable status symbol; fashion, a weapon in struggles for social change; and dress codes, a way to maintain political control. Merchants who dressed like princes and butchers’ wives wearing gem - encrusted crowns were public enemies in medieval societies structured by social hierarchy and defined by spectacle. In Tudor England, silk, velvet and fur were reserved for the nobility and ballooning pants called “trunk hose” could be considered a menace to good order. The Renaissance era Florentine patriarch Cosimo de Medici captured the power of fashion and dress codes when he remarked, “One can make a gentleman from two yards of red cloth.” Dress codes evolved along with the social and political ideals of the day, but they always reflected struggles for power and status. In the 1700s, South Carolina’s “Negro Act” made it illegal for Black people to dress “above their condition.” In the 1920s, the bobbed hair and form-fitting dresses worn by free-spirited flappers were banned in workplaces throughout the United States and in the 1940s the baggy zoot suits favored by Black and Latino men caused riots in cities from coast to coast. Even in today’s more informal world, dress codes still determine what we wear, when we wear it—and what our clothing means. People lose their jobs for wearing braided hair, long fingernails, large earrings, beards and tattoos or refusing to wear a suit and tie or make-up and high heels. In some cities, wearing sagging pants is a crime. And even when there are no written rules, implicit dress codes still influence opportunities and social mobility. Silicon Valley CEOs wear t-shirts and flip flops, setting the tone for an entire industry: women wearing fashionable dresses or high heels face ridicule in the tech world and some venture capitalists refuse to invest in any company run by someone wearing a suit". In Dress Codes, law professor and cultural critic Richard Thompson Ford presents an insightful and entertaining history of the laws of fashion from the middle ages to the present day, a walk down history’s red carpet to uncover and examine the canons, mores and customs of clothing—rules that we often take for granted. After reading Dress Codes, you’ll never think of fashion as superficial again—and getting dressed will never be the same.
