Breslau; bei Wilhelm Gottlieb Korn, 1798. First edition. Small 8:o. (11, 3 blanks), 394 pp. 19th century binding with light-brown calf spine and corners and dark-brown paper on the boards. The spine is divided into four gilt-edged panels one of which contains author and title information; at the foot of the spine there is a gilt-stamped floral decoration. With the signature of Axel Nybleus (1821-1899, Swedish philosopher) at top of front free endpaper and the bookplate of Johann Lyons at the bottom of front paste-down. A light, vertical crease on upper part of the spine. Two insignificant specks on the spine. Corners a bit bumped and rubbed. Minimal loss at the top corner of front free endpaper. A needle-sized hole in top margin from the title leaf until pp. 18, and in top margin of pp. 385 and onwards to the rear free endpaper. A small stain in the text on pp. 361/362. A few light specks throughout the book; contents surprisingly clean. Christian Garve (1742-1798) gained a master's degree in philosophy at the University of Halle in 1766. From 1770-1772 he was Extraordinary Professor of Mathematics and Logic at the University of Leipzig, a post he resigned from in order to devote himself to bookselling, writing and translating in his home town of Breslau. His deep interest in English philosophy led him to translate works of Adam Ferguson, Edmund Burke and Adam Smith. The book offered here is Garve's last work, and has become rather famous because, in it, he continues the criticism of Immanuel Kant's moral teachings which he had begun earlier in a review of the latter's Critique of Pure Reason and which provoked Kant into publishing an ""Anti-Garve"". Christian Garve believed that ""Kantian morality destroys all incentives that can move human beings to act at all"". Erstausgabe des letzten Werkes von Garve. Halbledereinband mit Rückenvergoldung. Sehr gut erhalten. Selten. Ziegenfuss I, 375.

Normal; University Galleries, Illinois State University, 1990. First edition. 21,5x27 cm. 127, (1) pp. Richly illustrated. Original printed wrappers. Spine is insignificantly worn. There are a series of small scratches on the wrappers, and a light cornerfold on front wrapper. Contents are fine. Catalogue of the exhibition that ran January 23 to March 4, 1990. With essays by Blinderman, Carlo McCormick, Curtis White, John Carlin, and the artist. ""Tongues of Flame was originally a limited edition catalog accompanying a 1990 retrospective show organized by Illinois State Univ. Galleries. In contrast to the deceptively simple personal intensity of Memories, this collection of 100 reproductions and ten essays overwhelms with its diversity of styles and whirlwind of emotions. Though the performances, sculpture, and film are all presented here, the best pieces are the collages, which combine painting, photography, and cartoons. These collages juxtapose and relate nature/man (buffalos, ants, and dung beetles are all common) to civilization. Throughout, the works simultaneously examine possibilities for personal liberty/identity and expose government/media/religious institutions that oppress. Recommended for all contemporary art collections and where 'anti-establishment' expressions are popular."" (Eric Bryant in Library Journal, 1992). From the library of Anders Tornberg Gallery in Lund, Sweden, and with a stamp confirming this on the last blank page.

Stockholm; Bonniers, 1940. 19,5x13 cm.

13,5x10,5 cm. Seven lines. Letter in Zola's handwriting, dated ""Médan 24 mai 79"", and signed by the author. In this short letter Zola asks the unnamed recipient, probably his publisher, to send him the novel by Vallès, on which he plans to write an article. The mentioned novel is apparently the newly-published L'Enfant, the first novel in the autobiographical trilogy by Zola's friend Jules Vallès (1833-1885), French novelist and journalist.

Patrik Andersson Antikvariat
pat16399
Paris, 1899. [61,5x45,5 cm]. 4 pages. Folded twice. Slightly yellowed and with some light creases. A very well-preserved copy. Zola's text covers 4 of the 6 columns on the front page. Le Cinquième Acte, published in september 1899, was the fourth of altogether seven articles and open letters published by Zola in l’Aurore between 1898 and 1900 in favour of the French Army captain of Jewish and Alsatian descent Alfred Dreyfus, charged with treason in 1894 in a much-publicized affaire. In the article Zola expresses his outrage with the military tribunal in Rennes where Dreyfus, repatriated from his imprisonment on the Devil’s Island, was tried again only to be re-condemned despite clear evidence in favour of his innocence. The anger and disappointment of Zola, who had spent almost a year in exile in London in the aftermath of his 1898 open letter “J’Accuse...!” is quite palpable in the text. The Rennes trial was, says Zola, supposed to be the fifth act of the play that was the Dreyfus affair -- a happy ending where the wronged party is redeemed -- but it turned out to be only the ”fourth act”: ”When, Oh dear God, will there be the Fifth?” Zola did not have to wait for very long for the ”fifth act”, as Dreyfus was pardoned later that same year on the grounds of feeble health. The finale of the affair was however not enacted until 1906, when Dreyfus was formally acquitted and his honour restored, something Zola himself sadly never lived to see.
