Værket, der udkom i bogform 2003-05, blev udarbejdet på videnskabelig grund af Det Danske Sprog- og Litteraturselskab og finansieret af Carlsbergfondet og staten. Værket omfatter både nyere ord fra tiden efter Ordbog over det Danske Sprog, dvs. efter 1955, og almensprogets øvrige ordforråd. Den dækker skriftsproget og inddrager talesproget, mens egentligt fagsprog ikke behandles. Værket er blev udarbejdet efter moderne leksikografiske principper, idet citaterne bl.a. blev hentet i store digitale tekstkorpora, elektronisk lagrede tekstsamlinger, hvorfra der kunne uddrages oplysninger om ordenes betydning og typiske brug, som tidligere ordbøger ikke har haft mulighed for at belyse lige så systematisk.
