Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir59962
Particular Books, 2014. Large 8vo softcover. 514 pp. Fine clean very good copy. Women in Clothes is a book unlike any other. It is essentially a conversation among hundreds of women of all nationalities - famous, anonymous, religious, secular, married, single, young, old -, on the subject of clothing, and how the garments we put on every day define and shape our lives. It began with a survey. The editors composed a list of more than fifty questions designed to prompt women to think more deeply about their personal style. Writers, activists, and artists including Cindy Sherman, Kim Gordon, Kalpona Akter, Sarah Nicole Prickett, Tavi Gevinson, Miranda July, Roxane Gay, Lena Dunham, and Molly Ringwald answered these questions with photographs, interviews, personal testimonies, and illustrations.Even our most basic clothing choices can give us confidence, show the connection between our appearance and our habits of mind, express our values and our politics, bond us with our friends, or function as armor or disguise. They are the tools we use to reinvent ourselves and to transform how others see us. Women in Clothes embraces the complexity of women’s style decisions, revealing the sometimes funny, sometimes strange, always thoughtful impulses that influence our daily ritual of getting dressed.

Collana editoriale della Fondazione Benetton Studi Ricerche / Antiga Edizioni / International Carlo Scarpa Prize for Gardens 2022. Large 4to in wraps as issued. 220, 33 b/w ill., 151 col. illustrations. Text in English. Very good copy. "The Natur-Park Südgelände, formerly a vast railyard, is the result of many years of abandonment and its later acknowledgement as a shining example of ‘Berlin’s urban nature, a crossroads where the aspirations of the local residents, the contemporary landscape culture and the manifestation of a profound ecological awareness for the city all come together. This large public space has been instrumental in redefining the concept of an inner-city park. Its abandoned railway structures, vast expanses of vegetation, which have for the most part been left to grow wild, and art installations which make a visit to the park even more enjoyable, emphasize the dialogue between signs of human presence and ever-evolving nature. The Natur-Park Südgelände, which is 1.7 kilometres long, is just one in a series of public parks which stretch from north to south of the city, created from a constellation of ‘empty’ spaces which were brought together to form a whole landscape. The park is a ‘piece of urban nature’ and an open laboratory where ecological experiments meet different social needs and new methods for tending and maintaining urban space are put into practice. The history of the Natur-Park Schöneberger Südgelände is inextricably linked with that of the city of Berlin in the years after the war, an isolated, divided city where the railways and industry had ground to a halt, the lines had gradually been decommissioned, the facilities abandoned, allowing nature to claim back the land for itself. Later, plans for future infrastructures led to the proposal to build a new freight station to the south of the city in Südgelände. However, in 1980, there was a change of heart, as an ecological conscience began to emerge and thus the realisation of the importance of this site, both for its naturalistic value and its social potential in the everyday lives of the city’s residents. The area was entrusted entirely to the Berlin Senate and managed, since 1986, by Grün Berlin, signalling the beginning of a great experimental ‘worksite’ and the intervention of ecologists, environmental associations, residents, the landscape planning studios Planland and ÖkoCon and the group of artists Odious, who were working on site. In an immersive condition, surrounded by the invasive presence of nature and the ‘ruins’ of an abandoned landscape, all those involved developed a modus operandi, resulting in the living experience of the Natur-Park Schöneberger Südgelände." - Content: Thilo Folkerts, Berlin, the emergence of an urban nature Natur Park Südgelände Ingo Kowarik, Südgelände, Berlin: transforming a wild urban wasteland to a new kind of nature park, Natur Park Südgelände: project, maintenance, development, Rita Suhrhoff in conversation with Thilo Folkert , Natur Park Südgelände: the role of the art, Klaus Duschat in conversation with Thilo Folkert Chronology of the Natur Park Schöneberger Südgelände 1838-2025: from shunting yard to nature park, Christoph Schmidt, A new city experience: the key role of Natur Park Südgelände for the urban paradigm shift in Berlin, Stefanie Hennecke, Berlin, a brief history of its parks, Almut Jirku, Like pearls on a string: the Berlin open spaces system and the Park am Gleisdreieck, Ingo Kowarik, The Berlin School of Urban Ecology and the emergence of wasteland ecology, Sandra Jasper, Berlin, a ruderal urbanism, Grün Berlin: sustainable routes for developing public space, Norbert Kühn, Urban spontaneous vegetation as a tool for climate adaptation, Heinz W. First edition, fine copy. - "(1–3) Making the audiovisual recording for the exhibition My first sonic Lok at Bahnmuseum Albula, Bergün, 2013. Installation of various analog sensors to record the vibrations and electro-magnetic waves during the operation of the locomotive on the world-famous Albula route. Gion Caprez, Andy Guhl. Live sound mix in the driver’s cab of the locomotive RhB GE 6/6 704 «Davos», 65-ton, 2400 HP engine, 11 kV, 16.7 Hz. (4) Eight different converters from physical waves—used as microphone or speaker. (5–6) My first sonic Lok, 170° video still, from the exhibition at Bahnmuseum Albula, Bergün.Taken from the audiovisual recording of a train locomotive ride on the Albula line. Visual of the cracking sounds of this high-voltage machine recorded by a video camera attached to the window of the locomotive". This book about the experimental musician Andy Guhl at first looks loud and somewhat confusing, but this is part of its programmatic intent. It is a reference to Guhl’s musical credo: for four decades, he has often moved on the border between music and noise with his disassembled and rewired everyday electronic devices. In addition, two important design decisions remind the reader that a book, like live music, has a temporal dimension: the left hand pages show full-bleed still images from audiovisual performances by Guhl, creating a strong rhythm as one leafs through; and on the right-hand pages, a continuous stream of various images and texts flows from top to bottom in a seemingly mechanical layout. On these pages, the unusual paper, reminiscent of carbon paper, is extremely susceptible to the traces left from being touched and scratched. The inevitable rapid wear on the volume, particularly on the cover, transforms each book into a unique art object. Most Beautiful Swiss Books 2014.

Published by Niggli, 2003. English, 160 Pages, 390 illustrations, 22 x 27.5 cm, clothbound hardcover with dustjacket. Fine copy. Typographic design begins with a set of information and a concept. The designer, facing a blank sheet of paper or a computer screen, is anxious about the first step to take in developing a design. The elements of typography are an obvious starting point, but often do not get the attention they deserve. A thorough understanding of how letters, words, lines, paragraphs and columns are formed, what makes them unique as design elements, and how they express character and emotion are the most essential tools in the designer’s repertoire. The basic principles of typographic design transform the utilitarian quality of words, lines, paragraphs and columns into an aesthetic form that conveys both the intellectual meaning and emotional feeling of the message. Through the relationship between the elements and space, and their rhythm and composition, design not only objectively conveys information but also gives subjective cues for the interpretation of its contents. As a visual form of language, typography is perceived as a whole before its individual parts are read. The surface characteristics of the design – the topology – create the first impression and derive from the form, size, position, and color of the typographic elements. Captured in a series of transparent diagrams, they reveal a new design dimension and animate the designer to further develop the original conceptual idea. This process provides the designer with a tool for refining, altering, adjusting, deconstructing and reassembling the individual levels to create a finely detailed, cohesive typographic composition.

Buckingham, Matthew:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir52822
Wien: Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig (Mumok), 2003. Small 8vo in stiff wraps as issued. 83 pages, text in English and German and with photos bw. Near fine / fine clean copy. First edition. "Buckingham transposes the London setting of Poe's story to the Vienna of Sigmund Freud and Graham Greene, tracing a young man’s pursuit of a mysterious, older stranger through the streets of the city for an entire day and night. Failing to learn the stranger’s identity or make a meaningful connection, the young man then begins the hunt anew. Poe's themes of doubling and shadowing, attraction, disorientation, and estrangement, physiognomy and typecasting, and self and doppelganger manifest themselves in the mechanics of the installation. Buckingham projects the film onto and through a semi-metallic, two-way glass screen that produces reversed images and multiple reflections of its protagonists. The twenty-four-hour narrative is condensed into a continuous, twenty-one-minute loop that evokes the young man's never-ending quest. Buckingham insinuates himself into the story—he is seen reflected from time to time in windows and mirrors as he follows on the heels of his fictional characters like a noir detective, or that other mythical type, the inconspicuous, objective documentary filmmaker. The gallerygoer who crosses the path of the projected image also becomes a shadowy figure in the crowd—a "third man."
