kir58965
London: Macmillan & Co., 1882. Original publisher's green cloth hardcover, spines and front covers lettered and decorated in gilt, brown endpapers, all edges gilt. Frontispieces with tissue guard, illustrated title pages printed in grey and green, 7 engraved plates, 96 b/w text illustrations, all engraved by J. D. Cooper after Randolph Caldecott. Inner hinges a bit week, but holding firm. Previous owners fine bookplate made by Povl Christensen (Else Fahnøe). Overall a very well preserved and very attractive copy. ""Old Christmas" (First published in a separately 1876 and identical to this copy) is a collection of five Christmas "sketches" by Washington Irving from his famous Sketch Book - A beautifully produced Christmas book which captures the essence of a Victorian Christmas. It describes Irving's experiences at the English country estate of Mr. Bracebridge during the "coaching days" of the early 19th century, focusing on the sights, sounds, smells and traditions of "Old" Christmas. In spirit it hearkens back to the Middle Ages -- before the "peasants" had learned to read newspapers or were talking politics at the local pub, when manner lords opened their halls for the local folk to feast in a show of gratitude, under the watchful stare of painted ancient family crusaders and armored statues. This wonderful account has a tangible sense of realism mixed with romanticism and the comforts of tradition.Drawings throughout are by Randolph Caldecott, a prolific and famous children's book artist of the 19th century. The pictures bring the book to life, we see the exact "physiognomy" and "countenance" of the many curious Dickens-like characters, the scenes of feasting and dancing, the old English kitchens, the stage coach, the dress and mannerisms of a "Coachy" - priceless details that effortlessly transport the reader back in time". - Washington Irving, one of the first Americans to achieve international recognition as an author, was born in New York City in 1783. His A History of New York, published in 1809 under the name of Diedrich Knickerbocker, was a satirical history of New York that spanned the years from 1609 to 1664. Under another pseudonym, Geoffrey Crayon, he wrote The Sketch-book, which included essays about English folk customs, essays about the American Indian, and the two American stories for which he is most renowned--"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle." Irving served as a member of the U.S. legation in Spain from 1826 to 1829 and as minister to Spain from 1842 to 1846.

Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir55582
New York, 2010. 4to in original magazine wraps. Around 180 pages. Some minor wavyness to pages and light wear to cover, mainly lower spine but solid and clean and complete. BIDOUN: Arts and Culture from the Middle East. (...)" the cover: a matte off-white surface with a photograph glued to its center. It might be black-and-white or colorful, pristine or blurred or torn along the edges. It might depict a portrait or an action, a business meeting or a wedding, maybe an accident. We have no idea, actually: we’ve never seen most of them, and probably never will. A friend of the magazine in Cairo purchased five thousand photos from flea-markets in Cairo and sent the lot of them directly to our printer, who glued them onto the cover and sent them out into the world, eliminating the middleman: us. This gesture — plundering one set of incidental archives to create another — seemed an appropriate way to herald the latest issue of Bidoun, which considers that ever-expanding entropy, the library. Building on Bidoun Projects’ recent exhibition at the New Museum for Contemporary Art in New York, we present a reading of five decades of printed matter, carefully selected with no regard for taste or quality, in an attempt to document every possible way that people have depicted and defined — slandered, celebrated, obfuscated, hyperbolized, ventriloquized, photographed, surveyed, and/or exhumed — that vast, vexed, nefarious construct known as “the Middle East.” The result is banal and offensive, a parade of stereotypes, caricatures, and misunderstandings of a sort that rarely makes it into the magazine, all the trappings of the Middle East as fetish: veils, oil, fashion victims; sexy sheikhs, sex with sheikhs, Sufis, stonings; calligraphy, the caliphate, terrorism; Israel."

Parc Saint Léger / MAC / VAL, Vitry-sur-Seine, 2010. 8vo two volumes cm 18×22,5; pp. 144+144 pp. Illustrated. Text in both French and English. Fine clean and complete set with the obi. First edition - SIGNED IN HAND WITH PENCIL TO INNERCOVER by the artist. -"A central work in the artist’s conception of the two exhibitions, “Les Maquettes en blanc (1995-2009)” presents all of Starling’s publications to date in one vitrine and their corresponding blank dummies in a second vitrine next to it. As Starling writes, this piece “mimics a series of other physical and intellectual journeys to be travelled in the exhibitions.” It seemed the logical starting point for the design of the catalog. THEREHERETHENTHERE is made of two volumes, one of which is the blank version of the other one, constituting its “dummy.” The other volume, however, simulates through offset printing the beige color and weave texture of the dummy’s cover and the white sticker on it presenting the paper stock information. These two volumes are held together with a red paper band showing the artist’s name, the title, the publishers’ logos, the bar code, and price. The size of this pair of books is an average calculated from all the books shown in “Les Maquettes en blanc.” Taking the artist’s idea of duality and transition further, the left-hand pages, set in Helvetica, constitute the French version of the book while the right-hand pages, set in Times, constitute the English version. The works in the two exhibitions are represented by onsite installation views, while all other works referred to in the essay are shown through their reproduction in previous publications. Copies of those publications were opened to the appropriate pages and scanned and reproduced in the present catalog on a one-to-one scale. The corresponding blank pages of those books’ dummies are reproduced in the same order with the exact same framing in the second half of the book. The different designers who worked on Simon Starling’s various publications are credited in the captions and bibliography. Text: David Julie, Patron Sandra et al.

DUMAS, MARLENE. - Coelewij, Leontine. - Sainsbury, Helen. - Vischer, Theodora (ed.):
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir55741
London: Tate Publishing, 2014. Large tall 4to in wraps, as issued. 196 pages, richly color illustrated. Text in English. Light shelfwear else clean and well preserved near fine copy. First edition. Text by Leontine Coelewij, Colm Toibin. Interview by Theodora Vischer. "Marlene Dumas is one of the most prominent and influential painters working today. In an era dominated by the mass media and a proliferation of images, her work is a testament to the meaning and potency of painting. Dumas draws on her expansive visual archive and the nuances of language to create intense, psychologically charged works which explore themes such as sexuality, love, death, and guilt, often referencing art history and current affairs. Her paintings and drawings are characterized by their extraordinary expressiveness and sometimes controversial subject matter. This fully illustrated exhibition catalogue accompanies a major exhibition at the Tate Modern, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Fondation Beyeler. Surveying the artist’s oeuvre from the mid-70s to the present, it features over 100 of her most important paintings and drawings alongside lesser-known works from the early period of her career. The Image as Burden also includes a new interview with the artist; extracts from previously published but lesser-known texts (some available in English for the first time); and a new short story from prize-winning author Colm Tóibín written in response to the paintings. Essays and texts from a wide range of contributors examine the key themes and motifs in her work and reflect on Dumas’s entire career."
