Persephone Books, 2002. 556 pp. Light edgewear but clean and overall well preserved. Written in 1936-7 by a young Austrian playwright living in exile in London, Manja opens, radically, with five conception scenes all set on the same night in 1920. In the midst of the turbulent Germany of the Weimar Republic, it goes on, equally dramatically, to describe the lives of the children and their families up until 1933 when the Nazis came to power. The four boys and one girl, Manja, become friends, but their companionship is doomed because of the differences between their parents; one father is a left-wing activist, another a Nazi, another a financier, another a Jewish musician. Yet Manja is far from being a political novel. Its startling originality lies in the way the the political background is perceived, steadily, from the child's point of view. We have all read about Germany in the 1930s from the historian's angle; there is, however, no novel we know of which sees German life during the period from the end of the First World War until 1933 in quite this clear-sighted way. 'What is so unusual,' wrote the playwright Berthold Viertel in 1938, 'is the way the novel contrasts the children's community - in all its idealism, romanticism, decency and enchantment - with the madhouse community of the adults.' Like The Priory, Manja was first published in English in September 1939: a reader 'spent seven nights totally beguiled and shocked by your clever juxtaposition of the two books.' The Preface is by the author's daughter, writer Eva Ibbotson; the new translation is by Kate Phillips.

Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir51868
Edinburgh University Press, 1977. Publishers hardcover, with slightly worn jacket. IX, 172 pages. Very good clean copy. First edition thus. - The Spanish poem Fábula de Polifemo y Galatea, The Fable of Polyphemus and Galatea, or simply the Polifemo, first published in 1627 - here with an English translation and a long thorough introduction. The poem, though borrowing heavily from prior literary sources of Greek and Roman Antiquity, attempts to go beyond the established versions of the myth by reconfiguring the narrative structure handed down by Ovid. Through the incorporation of highly innovative poetic techniques, Góngora effectively advances the background story of Acis and Galatea’s infatuation as well as the jealousy of the Cyclops Polyphemus. The Polifemo was completed in manuscript form in 1613 and was subsequently published in 1627 after Góngora’s death. Luis de Góngora y Argote was a Spanish Baroque lyric poet. Góngora and his lifelong rival, Francisco de Quevedo, are widely considered the most prominent Spanish poets of all time. His style is characterized by what was called culteranismo, also known as Gongorismo. This style existed in stark contrast to Quevedo's conceptismo.

Kirkegaards Antikvariat

Leipzig: Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig, 2000. 8vo in wraps as issued. 80 pages. Text in both German and English. Illustrated. Fine copy. Rare item by Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset - the catalogue booklet on occasion of the exhibition in Leipzig, "Zwischen anderen Ereignissen" . First edition. "Michael Elmgreen: Our show at Galerie für Zeitgenössiche Kunst in Leipzig was our first institutional solo exhibition in Germany. During the last couple of years there has been this tendency all over Europe to produce ambitious and spectacular shows. So we started to think about all the activity that lies in between these shows, all the preparations and the labor of installing such giant art events. In the end we decided to focus on that : To use our production budget to employ two craftsmen from the city of Leipzig and let them paint the entire kunsthall white - over and over again - throughout the duration of exhibition, which was approximately seven weeks. An almost endless renovation of the space. We wanted to highlight this important though unnoticed side of the process of exhibiting. The intension was to expand the little "time gap" that is usually only a week or so in between two shows. And turn this gap into the show itself. - Ingar Dragset : In previous works we've been dealing with the issue of borderl ines in a physical way - works that have been penetrating the architecture which divides the art institution from the surrounding environment. In Leipzig the work was situated in a kind of inter-time-zone... in the break between two other art events. At the same time we tried to make a link between the institution and its surroundings by interfering with the social situation of the city. Leipzig has, as a lot of other cities in the former eastern part of Germany, an extremely high rate of unemployment."
