Giedion, Sigfried
Antikvariat Antiqua

Leipzig & Berlin (1928). 26x18. VIII+128 pp. 90 photos and 49 perspectives, plans, etc. Printed grey cardboard covers with red lettering; the covers with repairs at corners and margins. First edition. A pioneering study and acclaim of steel and ferroconcrete construction in modern French architecture. Giedion questions the very idea of an architecture with definitive boundaries - if it is to survive at all, it must break out of the limits imposed on it by tradition and by its functioning as an institution. This ideology is exemplified with illustrations from the work of Perret, Garnier, Le Corbusier, Mallet-Stevens, Sauvage, Guevrekian, Lurçat, and others.

Last two leaves truncated in outer margin without loss of text. Former owner's name on title page. Saarinen's plan for the extension of Helsinki by the foundation of the satellite community Munkkiniemi-Haaga. Saarinen's most extensive town planning scheme, it is extremely thorough and comprises - in addition to the carefully drawn plan - a detailed study of the townscape with models and designs for a variety of building types. The scheme got a wide publicity but before realisation had begun, the state of economy changed radically and only fragments of the plan were realised.

This was the first Swedish enterprise of its kind, a loan exhibition comprising more than 2000 objects from private collections, categorised into ceramics (the most substantial section), metal work, glass ware, furniture and woodwork, clocks and watches, and enamels, selected by a committe under the guidance of Gustaf Upmark. The descriptive catalogue, edited by Ludvig Looström, was the first Swedish scientific catalogue of applied art. It was not published until after the exhibition was opened, but does not include all objects, some of which were added during the course of the exhibition.
