Helsinki, SHS, 1994. Diss. (Turku). 8vo. 376 pp. With bibliography and index. / Summary in English (10 pp.). Sewn as issued, pictorial wrappers. As new.

Also discusses the goldsmiths in Umeå, Gävle and Malmö. - - - Traditionally, the goldsmith of the 18th century has been seen as an art craftsman making fine dishes and candlesticks. Kirsi Vainio-Korhonen's research also brings another kind of reality into view: the abundance of spoons, goblets, backs and rings, and the fact that only scraps of the abundance of objects from that time have survived to our days. The author bases her analysis on the documentation of the second half of the 18th century - the workbooks kept by the goldsmiths themselves, in which all the precious metal goods stamped by the masters are listed item by item. Vainio-Korhonen takes the reader inside the workshop: she introduces the masters, journeymen and apprentices, raw material sources, work methods and the organization of the workshops. Through goldsmithing, she describes the second half of the 18th century as a favorable economic period, when Finnish goldsmiths in particular overtook the advantage gained in the heartlands of the Swedish Empire in the early 18th century. The author also highlights the buyers of precious metal objects: nobles, factory workers, priests, officers, urban burghers and wealthy farmers. - - - (Historiallisia tutkimuksia, 182.)
