LOMBARDI, INES:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir51127
Wien: Secession & Revolver Publishing, 2011. Large tall 4to in stiff wraps as issued. 80 pages illustrated with full page colour plates. Text at end in German and English. Fine copy with only minimal shelfwear. Openness, complexity, and difference, reality as a hybrid and dynamic construct: these are the hallmarks of a steadily growing corpus of works on which Inés Lombardi has been working since the late 1980s. Through endless variations and concatenations in a variety of media including photography and video as well as installations and objects, the artist demonstrates how complex human perception is. Space plays a significant role in the artist's presentation of her works, which perpetually call for new contexts and settings that endow them with new meaning. The new series Past Present Close and Distant, which Inés Lombardi developed for her exhibition at the Secession, continues this process. In questioning the relationship of the garden, surrounding landscape, and architecture at Residência Olivo Gomes and the Fazenda Vargem Grande, two gardens by the Brazilian landscape architect and painter Roberto Burle Marx, the artist examines the relationship between past and present and addresses questions of identity and diversity. Further aspects of her investigation concern the Self and the Other and the appropriation of the unknown, nature as a construct, modernity in Brazil, and the formation of national identities. Her research covers the writings of travelers and explorers, the Romantic naturalism of the nineteenth century, and our own complex relationships to this part of our history. By publishing a hybrid text, Inés Lombardi offers a magisterial solution for expanding the exhibition concept, which she has opened up to encompass book format. Weaving together statements from her artist, architect, and theorist friends about their personal impressions of the images the artist sent to them, she has created a text collage that forms a new ensemble from the sum of its parts. The result is open and complex and as dynamic as all of the artist's works.

Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir51868
Edinburgh University Press, 1977. Publishers hardcover, with slightly worn jacket. IX, 172 pages. Very good clean copy. First edition thus. - The Spanish poem Fábula de Polifemo y Galatea, The Fable of Polyphemus and Galatea, or simply the Polifemo, first published in 1627 - here with an English translation and a long thorough introduction. The poem, though borrowing heavily from prior literary sources of Greek and Roman Antiquity, attempts to go beyond the established versions of the myth by reconfiguring the narrative structure handed down by Ovid. Through the incorporation of highly innovative poetic techniques, Góngora effectively advances the background story of Acis and Galatea’s infatuation as well as the jealousy of the Cyclops Polyphemus. The Polifemo was completed in manuscript form in 1613 and was subsequently published in 1627 after Góngora’s death. Luis de Góngora y Argote was a Spanish Baroque lyric poet. Góngora and his lifelong rival, Francisco de Quevedo, are widely considered the most prominent Spanish poets of all time. His style is characterized by what was called culteranismo, also known as Gongorismo. This style existed in stark contrast to Quevedo's conceptismo.

Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir50891
Leipzig: Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig, 2000. 8vo in wraps as issued. 80 pages. Text in both German and English. Illustrated. Fine copy. Rare item by Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset - the catalogue booklet on occasion of the exhibition in Leipzig, "Zwischen anderen Ereignissen" . First edition. "Michael Elmgreen: Our show at Galerie für Zeitgenössiche Kunst in Leipzig was our first institutional solo exhibition in Germany. During the last couple of years there has been this tendency all over Europe to produce ambitious and spectacular shows. So we started to think about all the activity that lies in between these shows, all the preparations and the labor of installing such giant art events. In the end we decided to focus on that : To use our production budget to employ two craftsmen from the city of Leipzig and let them paint the entire kunsthall white - over and over again - throughout the duration of exhibition, which was approximately seven weeks. An almost endless renovation of the space. We wanted to highlight this important though unnoticed side of the process of exhibiting. The intension was to expand the little "time gap" that is usually only a week or so in between two shows. And turn this gap into the show itself. - Ingar Dragset : In previous works we've been dealing with the issue of borderl ines in a physical way - works that have been penetrating the architecture which divides the art institution from the surrounding environment. In Leipzig the work was situated in a kind of inter-time-zone... in the break between two other art events. At the same time we tried to make a link between the institution and its surroundings by interfering with the social situation of the city. Leipzig has, as a lot of other cities in the former eastern part of Germany, an extremely high rate of unemployment."
